Digital Twins + GenAI Agents Are Rewiring Manufacturing  /digital-twins-genai-agents-are-rewiring-manufacturing/ /digital-twins-genai-agents-are-rewiring-manufacturing/#respond Thu, 07 Aug 2025 19:31:00 +0000 /?p=22335 By Greg Porter, Principal Solutions Architect at Stv Digital Twins + GenAI Agents Are Rewiring Manufacturing  MAGS and digital twins drive smarter, sustainable factories with real-time AI decisions, seamless interoperability, and industry-wide efficiency gains.   Across the manufacturing industry, organizations have embraced digital twins to maximize operational efficiency, automation, and productivity. The Digital Twin Consortium defines a digital twin as a “virtual representation of real-world entities and processes, synchronized at a specified frequency and fidelity.” Digital twins provide a holistic, end-to-end data view across an entire organization, powered by domain knowledge and real-time data. Today, Multi-agent GenAI Systems (MAGS) allow digital twins to go even further. Made up of multiple interacting GenAI-based agents, MAGS works together to solve operational challenges across the manufacturing industry, increasing production throughput and reducing maintenance planning time. AI agents within MAGS will ultimately become fully autonomous – capable of building, maintaining, and operating their digital twins. At the same time, the rise of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – an open standard for connecting AI systems and data sources – will further position MAGS and digital twins as key enablers of next-generation manufacturing and help companies keep pace with the industry’s rapid evolution. Empowering Efficiency and Sustainability MAGS and digital twins are growing in popularity as the industry focuses on efficiency and sustainability. Manufacturers can build smarter operations, reducing utility usage, cutting costs, and improving energy efficiency at scale. While traditional machine learning tools can make relevant predictions — about energy consumption, for example — with historical data and mathematical algorithms, MAGS goes further. By leveraging GenAI-based agents that can learn and adapt in real time, MAGS enables systems to make intelligent decisions, including predicting when and where resources will be needed and when they can be conserved, and proceeding to drive automated actions. Paired with digital twins, manufacturers can effectively simulate and optimize energy use across entire facilities. For example, MAGS can detect when specific areas of a factory are unoccupied and automatically power down lighting, air conditioning, or idle machinery, lowering energy consumption without disrupting operations in other parts of the factory. Interoperability is Imperative Interoperability is critical in a company’s ability to stay agile and responsive to evolving manufacturing demands. However, today’s manufacturers often operate in technological siloes, with isolated digital twins and proprietary systems that duplicate efforts and limit visibility. Companies that fully embrace MAGS and digital twin technology can unlock robust interoperability, empowering systems, platforms and tools to communicate and operate seamlessly across different vendors, departments and production sites worldwide. When integrated with digital twin technology, MAGS can break down technological siloes. Unlike standalone systems, MAGS deploys its GenAI agents to analyze data and collaborate across systems to make faster, more informed decisions. These agents enable manufacturers to virtually simulate and coordinate everything from production scheduling to equipment performance across varying platforms, without relying on centralized control. As manufacturing becomes increasingly digitized, industry-wide collaboration on interoperability standards – such as efforts by organizations like the Digital Twin Consortium – will be essential to harnessing the full potential of digital twins and MAGS, enabling seamless integration across systems and accelerating innovation at scale. Manufacturers that invest in open, interoperable digital twin ecosystems will be best positioned to lead in the years ahead. What’s Next: Model Context Protocol As organizations increasingly adopt MAGS and digital twins, incompatibility has emerged as a common challenge between models and tools. Until now, tool calling – the process of AI models interacting with external tools – has lacked standardization. Eachlarge language modelandagent frameworkhas had its own way of calling tools, so if a manufacturer built custom tools for one model and later switched to another, they’d often have to rebuild or reconfigure those tools entirely – a time-consuming and expensive process. The release of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) this past November aims to change that by acting as a universal tool-calling standard, or the “USB-C” of AI models. It provides a model-agnostic interface that allows any LLM or agent framework to communicate with tools in a standardized way, a major step toward tool interoperability in AI agent and digital twin ecosystems. With MCP, the model simply communicates with the MCP server, which handles the tool orchestration underneath. This is a game-changer for manufacturing, where digital twins and MAGS are often interacting with dozens of legacy systems, sensors and machinery. This evolution is already happening in sectors like mining, where major players have deployed fully autonomous mining vehicles. These vehicles not only operate independently underground but also monitor their own mechanical health, drive themselves to the repair dock when needed, automatically open a repair ticket, diagnose the issue and then trigger the appropriate response – all through tool calling of the agents. We’re seeing a similar paradigm shift toward fully autonomous systems in manufacturing. For example, AI agents now monitor machinery health in real time – analyzing sensor data to predict failures before they happen. In quality control, AI-powered vision systems inspect products in real-time, automatically flagging defects and adjusting production settings to maintain quality standards without human intervention. MCP represents a promising step toward standardized, scalable AI-powered manufacturing systems. As the protocol matures and becomes more developer and enterprise-friendly, manufacturers will be better positioned to take advantage of truly autonomous agents that can monitor, manage and optimize operations in real-time. Looking ahead, the manufacturing sector is poised for even more transformative changes. As AI, digital twins and MAGS continues to advance, we can expect the rise of fully autonomous factories where AI agents manage every aspect of production, from initial design to final delivery. Enabling efficiency, predictive maintenance and dynamic resource allocation, these systems will empower more resilient and adaptable manufacturing ecosystems. Companies that invest in these systems now will not only stay competitive, but also lead the next wave of industrial innovation. The path to a more sustainable and efficient manufacturing landscape tomorrow, begins with embracing the power of digital twins and MAGS

Digital Twins + GenAI Agents Are Rewiring Manufacturing

MAGS and digital twins drive smarter, sustainable factories with real-time AI decisions, seamless interoperability, and industry-wide efficiency gains.

Across the manufacturing industry, organizations have embraced  to maximize operational efficiency, automation, and productivity.

The  defines a digital twin as a “virtual representation of real-world entities and processes, synchronized at a specified frequency and fidelity.” Digital twins provide a holistic, end-to-end data view across an entire organization, powered by domain knowledge and real-time data.

Empowering Efficiency and Sustainability

MAGS and digital twins are growing in popularity as the industry focuses on efficiency and sustainability.

Interoperability is Imperative

Interoperability is critical in a company’s ability to stay agile and responsive to evolving manufacturing demands.

What’s Next: Model Context Protocol

As organizations increasingly adopt MAGS and digital twins, incompatibility has emerged as a common challenge between models and tools.

Until now, tool calling – the process of AI models interacting with external tools – has lacked standardization. Eachandhas had its own way of calling tools, so if a manufacturer built custom tools for one model and later switched to another, they’d often have to rebuild or reconfigure those tools entirely – a time-consuming and expensive process.

The path to a more sustainable and efficient manufacturing landscape tomorrow, begins with embracing the power of digital twins and MAGS today.

In the podcast, Fry shares that interoperability, the ability for data to be shared across systems, is relatively new to the Department of Defense and is the cornerstone of Stv’s work on the meshONE-T contract for the U.S. Space Force. Prior to this concept, data was siloed to its relevant mission and network constraints prevented large amounts of data from being transported quickly. Additionally, Fry shares that now network building can accommodate large transfers of data securely by incorporating new technologies including segment routing, ST-WAN, IPV6, and zero trust architecture. “We are being asked to connect systems, connect factories, connect commercial entities in their [development] environments and the capabilities that are moving missions forward in their operational environments, said Fry. “So, they can move the data back and forth, create new capabilities in the dev and push those out to ops so the space force can really get the job done.” A takeaway from the discussion was how cybersecurity will play a crucial role as large amounts of mission-critical data are transported across the Department of Defense. Fry shares the challenges of data security and emphasizes the need for data encryption for data in transport as well as data tagging. Fry concludes that insider threats are real and emphasizes the need for improved network monitoring to track users and prevent unintentional threats to the network. WOODBRIDGE, Va., Jan. 23, 2025— Greg Porter,Principal Solutions Architect, was featured in ղѵDz’s 2025 Modern Data Center Technology Prediction Series article titled “MAGS and Interoperability will Empower Digital Twins in 2025” to discuss how digital twin adoption has skyrocketed over the past year and the emerging trends to expect in 2025. In the article, Porter emphasizes how digital twins help industry and government maximize efficiency and optimize decision-making with real-time data integration. He shares how digital twin capabilities are advancing by incorporating Multi-agent GenAI systems (MAGS) that can solve operational challenges and sustain their digital twin. Porter predicts that MAGS will contribute to business sustainability initiatives, as digital twins can predict resource usage and drive automated processes that can conserve energy, such as turning lights off when a room is unoccupied. Additionally, he believes interoperability will be key to how digital twins operate in the government space and that incoming AI legislation needs to find a balance between ethical transparency and technical innovation. Porter further emphasizes how these trends will play a role in the increasing digital twin adoption. “2024 saw a significant increase in digital twin adoption, reflecting organizations’ push to remain agile and responsive to the demands of the federal and commercial landscapes,” said Porter. “With the introduction of MAGS, increased focus on interoperability and strategic AI governance, 2025 will be the year that organizations can fully understand, manage, and leverage digital twin technology effectively for mission success.” Porter anticipates incoming guidelines to promote interoperability in digital twins for government agencies. Interoperability saves both time and money by enabling the exchange of critical information and overcoming technological siloes. Additionally, AI legislation is likely to pass in 2025 which could impact MAGS if it is too restrictive, limiting its effectiveness. Although AI legislation is necessary to ensure ethical use and privacy, too much can limit AI capabilities and reduce impactful applications such as biometrics within the healthcare industry. Future policies will play a crucial role in shaping the development of digital twins. Greg Porter, Stv’s Principal Solutions Architect, Featured in Article by VMBlog

Stv’s Principal Solutions Architect shares his predictions for digital twins in 2025 with further adoption across industry and government and future trends including multi-agent GenAI, interoperability and incoming policy.

“With the introduction of MAGS, increased focus on interoperability and strategic AI governance, 2025 will be the year that organizations can fully understand, manage, and leverage digital twin technology effectively for mission success.”

Porter anticipates incoming guidelines to promote interoperability in digital twins for government agencies.

Digital Twins: Transforming Government Operations with Interoperability

Digital twin technology can replicate almost everything about a physical environment.

Over the past decade, the prevalence of digital twins has skyrocketed within government.

As defined by the, a digital twin is a virtual representation of real-world entities and processes, synchronized at a specified frequency and fidelity. Powered by domain knowledge and real time data, digital twins provide a holistic, end-to-end view of data across an entire organization.

With digital twins, agencies can simulate operations far more efficiently and cost effectively than building physical representations. Using generative artificial intelligence and machine learning, the technology can replicate everything about a physical environment or asset. These virtual representations, combined with sensors to collect real time data and live feedback, allow users to dive deep into real world operating scenarios.

For example, when operational equipment needs to be deployed, it’s essential to understand how it’s operating, the potential for outages and what can be done to prevent such events.

A digital twin gives agencies the ability to track all of that not only in real-time, but also in the future through predictive data analysis—allowing them to predict problems and prescribe fixes before they occur.

The Power of Digital Twins in Government

Implementation of digital twins has expanded across government and is already making a major impact. The GAO’sdetails how the technology is used for capabilities, from supply chain management and spacecraft manufacturing to healthcare and climate forecasting.

We’ve seen widespread use of digital twins within numerous agencies, such as the,,, theand more.

For example, NASA is building a digital twin of its Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, where the agency manufactures critical hardware components for rockets under development. By utilizing digital twins, the space agency aims to improve the efficiency and quality of facility maintenance and manage the needs of NASA programs, which will ultimately lead to decreased downtimes, improved communication and lower costs.

Digital twin technology is also playing a pivotal role within government’s manufacturing process, fueled by the Department of Commerce’s goal to innovate the federal approach to manufacturing through.

As agencies see how digital twins can streamline service delivery and optimize decision-making and much more, their use cases are expanding, leading to a need for interoperability.

Increased interoperability between digital twins and across larger ecosystems will allow digital twins to make an even greater impact on government operations and help meet the evolving demands of today’s digital-first environment.

Interoperability is Key to Digital Twin Success

While digital twins continue to gain momentum in the public sector, a key factor in maximizing the technology’s benefits will be advanced interoperability.

Data is the foundation of any digital twin. Within larger agency ecosystems, there can be numerous vendor—each with their own digital twin—working on their component of a complex project simultaneously. This means data is coming from many different sources within an agency or across multiple agencies.

It’s imperative for these digital twins to effectively communicate with one another and exchange critical data to ensure actions are aligned and platforms are compatible.

Without this capability, there is a higher cost to entry for digital twins and a lower ROI as each digital twin is practically working in a silo. This can create complexity in the deployment and management of a digital twin, potentially resulting in costly missteps that can delay production and hinder mission success.

A lack of interoperability also diminishes trust—the degree of confidence that a system performs as expected regarding safety, security, privacy, reliability and resilience — across the organization.

Enhanced digital twin interoperability allows for a successful industrial metaverse, allowing agencies with multiple vendors and dispersed facility sites the ability to successfully interact with one another to complete a specific project.

The ability to effectively consume and react to information from another system allows the digital twin to be an additive to the collective intelligence of an organization, as opposed to a hinderance. Ultimately, this leads to the holistic understanding of information exchanged between any components.

Additionally, interoperability provides data provenance — the ability to identify the place of origin for a specific piece of data—which is critical to validate any conclusion made from analyzing project information.

Digital twins are applicable to virtually all industries, however, agencies looking to adopt digital twin technology must consider a platform with robust interoperability capabilities. By leveraging an organization’s existing application programming interfaces (APIs) and other connection methods, an interoperable digital twin platform can eliminate the need to purchase additional proprietary software suites or undergo costly migrations of existing data models into new systems.
